Studio Electronics – Boomstar Synthesizer

Another desktop synthesizer is born, Boomstar by Studio Electronics, and it looks nice. It comes in 4 different models/filter types emulating some of the true classics. Can’t wait to get my hands on this thing!

This new blazing brainchild of STUDIO ELECTRONICS represents the design collective ethos of circuit and software “Saseong” Tim Caswell, tactile layout and lead feature specialist Greg St. Regis, graphic and sound consultant Marc St. Regis, art design wizard of vector truth, John Greczula, cool-headed concept leader Geoff Farr and our relentless and wise feature and functionality consultant, Drew Neumann.

Four Models/Filter types: 4075-classic Arp 2600, 5089-classic Moog 24db ladder, SEM-classic Oberheim 12db, 303-classic Roland TB.

Waldorf Pulse 2 – analog synthesizer

Waldorf is back with yet another powerful synthesizer – Waldorf Pulse 2 – a beast in disguise. It looks a lot like the Waldorf Blofeld, but it is “the Waldorf Pulse” sound in a sturdy metal case.

Three analog oscillators in combination with a true analog cascading filter is what Pulse and Pulse 2 have in common. But we didn’t stop there. The filter circuits now also offer Highpass and Bandpass modes. We added analog Filter FM and Ring Modulation along with paraphonic modes that allow up to eight voice chords.

Specifications:
3 analog oscillators + 1 noise generator
Pulse width modulation
Hard sync
Filter FM from Oscillator 3
Ring Modulation from Oscillator 3
XOR Osc Mode
8/4 Voice Paraphonic modes
Cascade Filter
24dB/12db Lowpass, 12db Highpass/Bandpass filter modes
Powerful Arpeggiator
8-slot Modulation Matrix
USB
MIDI
External analog signal input
Stereo line out
Headphone out
Backwards compatible with classic Pulse
128×64 character backlit LCD
8 stainless steel knobs
500 Sound Programs
Electron-absorbing black case

News from Oberheim

We love synthesizers here at justastudio, and Oberheim just released their SEM which comes in three different versions, it looks nice.

1) NEW! SEM-PRO. SEM with MIDI to CV Converter and integrated Patchpanel. This version combines the features of the MIDI to CV version (see below) with a 21-jack patchpanel and is personally autographed by me. The U.S. price is $1199.

2) SEM with Patchpanel. All internal SEM connections are brought out to 3.5mm minijacks – all 33 of them. The basic connections are a one-volt-per-octave VCO control voltage and a standard 0 to +5 volt gate signal. On this version of the SEM, there is no MIDI input. The U.S. price is $899.

3) SEM with MIDI to CV Converter. This version includes a high precision MIDI to CV Converter that has been specifically designed to allow MIDI to control the SEM, and has additional features that make use of the SEM’s external inputs. Some of the features of the MIDI to CV Converter are:

  • Select MIDI channel, controller number and bend range
  • Select note assignment modes: latest, high note and low note priorities
  • Select note re-trigger, filter track, LFO reset
  • A second independent control bus allows velocity, controller data, or channel pressure to modulate either or both VCOs, the filter and the VCA
  • Transpose function allows different keyboard controllers to utilize the complete MIDI note range
  • Analog portamento
  • Input preamp gain control – allows an external audio input to be processed thru the SEM
  • High precision A-440 Hz tune signal
  • Control voltages and gate are bought out to rear panel connectors so MIDI to CV function can be used with other CV/Gate gear.

The U. S. price is $899.

MEEBLIP – we want one!

A cute little synth, DIY open source synth actually. We really want one – now!
It only costs $129, but then you have to assemble the machine yourself.

MeeBlip is a hackable, affordable digital synthesizer, made for accessible sound and hands-on control. It can be someone’s first synth. It can be a unique-sounding addition to your music setup, playable with MIDI hardware and software. It can be a synth you open up and modify, learning about sound creation, code, and electronics. Or it can be the basis of new projects and ideas.

MEEBLIP

The instrument is designed by James Grahame, synthesist, aficionado of things both digital and retro, and engineer at Reflex Audio, in collaboration with Create Digital Music. We wanted something playable and hackable, and the MeeBlip fits the bill.

The MeeBlip’s story doesn’t end when you get it. It’s built to be a community synth. We’re not just releasing code and schematics and calling it a day; the MeeBlip will be supported by Create Digital Music and the Noisepages community to help get you started with ideas for how to use, play, and modify it.

Samples from MFB-SYNTH LITE
Recorded using TC konnekt 8
Raw samples – no EQ / Normalizer / Limiter

Just some random sounds made in a hurry (we’ve sold it).
This little devil can create some dirty’n'complex mono sound structures.
